The debate on the English Revolution is firmly established as an essential guide to the literature in its field and appears in a much revised third edition. New chapters are included on 20th century historians' treatments of social complexities, politics, political culture and revisionism, and on the Revolution's unstoppable reverberations. All the other chapters have been amended and recast to take account of recent publications. The book provides a searching re-examination of why the English Revolution remains such a provocatively controversial subject and analyses the different ways in which historians over the last three centuries have tried to explain its causes, course and consequences. Claredon, Hume, Macaulay, Gardiner, Tawney, Hill, and the present-day revisionists are given extended treatment, while discussion of the work of numerous other historians is integrated into a coherent, informative readable survey.

Case studies provide one of the most realistic and fruitful ways of approaching historiography, and this book for the first time adds the English Revolution to the list of those available. The English revolution of the mid seventeenth century - that crucial and compex period which involved the downfall of Charles I's government, civil war, social upheaval, and the creation of a republic - has been the subject of continuous controversy for the last three hundred years. Moreover it is a subject which has never failed to attract the most eminent historians - Clarendon in the seventeenth century, Hume in the eighteenth, Macaulay and Gardiner in the nineteenth, and Tawney and Hil in the twentieth. Dr. Richardson's learned but unusually readable short study shows exacty why the English revolution remains so controversial a subject. 195 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
