The book examines the major problems of development in tropical countries and emphasizes the principles that provide the necessary comparative and theoretical framework for the study of development phenomenon. The approach is interdisciplinary and begins with a study of natural and human resources in development planning (five chapters). There are three chapters on agriculture: (1) descriptive, types of tropical agriculture; (2) the increase in agricultural production which discusses intensification, increased extension of agricultural land, large-scale schemes, and mechanization; (3) the sectoral balance between agriculture and industry in development plans. There are chapters on: (a) aid and trade; (b) transport and markets; (c) political and social institutions; (d) development plans and economic aid. Finally there are three case studies which examine the development process in the light of the topics discussed in the book, for Brazil, Nigeria and India.
