Seller: Wykeham Books, LONDON, United Kingdom
Limited edition of 500 numbered copies signed by the editor. Quarter-leather and marbled boards, pictorial endpapers, 8vo, 25 cm, xxvii, 115 pp, facs. From the prospectus: "The verse brought together in this exceptional volume is probably the last unpublished work of Kipling's maturity. In 1914 Kipling acquired a copy of the Riccardi Press edition of Horace and kept this by him wherever he went. From time to time until shortly before his death in 1936 he scribbled in its margins epigrams and short poems. Some are highly condensed versions of odes, some are witty comments on their contents, some are original epigrams of his own. Charles Carrington's extended introduction relates the translations to Kipling's literary biography on which he is the acknowledged authority. The central section of the book consists of the Latin originals on the left hand page and Kipling's versions, with editorial notes and commentary, on the right. Finally, there are a dozen pages of Kipling's 'Imitations' from Horace in original English verse. The publication of this limited edition in November provides a unique opportunity to all Kipling enthusiasts and discerning collectors of fine books. " Copy No. 493, signed by Charles Carrington. Near Fine in a slightly scuffed slipcase. Publisher's prospectus and order form laid in, a little darkened and creased. Seller Inventory # ABE-63399
