Pastoral counselling has had a significant role in the development of the wider British counselling movement over the past thirty years. Yet this role has often gone unacknowledged, and little has been written about the implications of its distinctive identity within counselling.
Clinical Counselling in Pastoral Settings fills this gap by offering an exploration of clinical issues that are distinctive to the work of pastoral counsellors in a way that is made clearly relevant to practice, whilst exploring wider issues.
Contents include:
* Pastoral counselling in multi-cultural settings
* Pastoral counselling and the therapeutic frame
* Transference within the pastoral counselling relationship
* Integrated theology and psychology in pastoral counselling
* The promise and difficulties of pastoral counselling

A new book exploring key issues for pastoral counsellors
From my experience of the UK counselling scene there are a substantial number of counsellors who are either working in settings connected to religious organisations or whose work is strongly motivated by their personal religious beliefs. There are very few books published in Britain, however, that help these counsellors to think about the implications of this religious dimension of their counselling practice.
This book has been produced very much with counselling practitioners in mind. Each chapter takes a particular theme and considers its significance for people involved in pastoral counselling work. Case material is used frequently throughout the book in order to make clear connections between theory and practice. Some chapters explore how religious resources, such as religious tradition and prayer, can appropriately shape the counselling process. Other chapters explore professional and ethical issues for pastoral counsellors, such as the nature and role of therapeutic boundaries in pastoral settings. Cultural issues are also discussed, in particular what it means to engage in pastoral counselling work in a post-modern and multi-cultural society. Other chapters explore themes such as the significance of transference and counter-transference in the pastoral counselling setting, the nature of work with those who have been abused in religious settings and future challenges for pastoral counselling in Britain.
This book is likely to be useful to qualified counsellors, or to those undertaking counselling training, who are interested in thinking about the implications of the religious dimension of their work. Those engaged in pastoral work more generally will also find useful material in the book as well that will help them to think about the spiritual, psychological and cultural dimensions of their practice. The book contains useful theoretical material, as well as practical discussions of case material, and trainers in the fields of counselling or theological education may well want to recommend this book as a useful resource to their students.
Pastoral counselling has had a significant role in the development of the wider British counselling movement since the 1970s. Yet this role has often gone unacknowledged, and little has been written about the implications of its distinctive identity within counselling. This book offers an exploration of clinical issues that are distinctive to the work of pastoral counsellors in a way that is made relevant to practice, whilst exploring wider issues. Contents include: pastoral counselling in multi-cultural settings; pastoral counselling and the therapeutic frame; transference within the pastoral counselling relationship; integrated theology and psychology in pastoral counselling; and the promise and difficulties of pastoral counselling.
