Synopsis

This is the 3rd edition of an introduction to management. Starting with the transition to a managerial role, it identifies and explains the basic skills and responsibilities required: delegation, motivation, selection, appraisal, counselling, disciplinary handling, industrial relations and the skills involved in handling meetings. Throughout, the need to identify objectives, to establish priorities and to manage time effectively is stressed. The differences in styles needed between various organizations or in different countries is also examined. This edition has been expanded to take account of recent developments in management theory. It gives new attention to concerns such as performance-related pay, increased localization and new technology, stressing the modern need for prioritization and greater cost-effectiveness in the face of cuts in resources.

Review

"It has a good opening chapter, concentrating as it does on how a lot of people get to be managers and the problems that this results in. In fact, the book does not shy away from any of the real life messiness of management, which I like a lot. There are lots of good real life examples of the topics covered in each section...I like the clarity and the level of the language, and find the explanations easy to follow." Helen Davis, London Metropolitan University, UK

"An excellent blend of theory and practice. Something in it for management practitioners at all levels. The authors make good use of their experience of working in a variety of different countries, including Malaysia. The many case studies and illustrative examples bring the book to life and make make it highly useful as well as very readable. The authors concepts of the managerial escalator, hybrid managers and the managerial gap are of fundamental importance to all those with managerial responsibility." Tan Sri Arshad bin Ayub, Mara Institute of Technology, Malaysia

"I think this text offers a broad overview of all the topics and issues that a manager has to deal with on a regular basis. The text is structured in a way that is user friendly. The chapters all have an identical look and are set up in a similar structure, which is good for students when adopting a text. It is clear the authors have worked in unison to create a coherent text. The text, as the title implies offers a wide range of skills suitable to managers. It is clear that the authors have practical experience of the issues that they have written about." Chris Doran, University of Salford, UK
