Synopsis
Together, the two volumes of this book provide a comprehensive review of receptors in the developing nervous system, placing basic and clinical information into perspective and pointing to possible areas for future research. The authors take a contemporary approach emphasizing information derived from the application of cell and molecular biology. Receptors related to growth factors and hormones are discussed in Volume 1 and those related to neurotransmitters in Volume 2. A number of themes are maintained throughout both volumes: the receptor and the compound interacting with it are considered as a unit; transient receptors are discussed; the possibility that evolving receptors are vital in establishing the framework of pathways or architecture in the brain is discussed; the implications that alternations in the development of neural receptors may have for the structure and function of the organism are reviewed. This book should be of interest to developmental biologists, neuroscientists, neurologists, pharmacologists, and clinical researchers.
