The aim of the Congress was to promote a fuller knowledge and understanding of the behaviour and properties of construction materials, in order both to optimize the use of existing materials and, and to target research at developing construction materials for specific applications. The first volume, pore structure and materials properites, deals with the influences of porosity and manufacturing processes on the capability of a material to fulfil various functional requiremens. Subjects covered include: the type of structure required, pore engineering, interaction between phases (solid/solid, solid/fluid), test methods and optimization by modelling the material's response to its function. The second volume, durabilility of construction materials, explores in depth the effects of the full range of environmental factors on construction materials so that the long-term behaviour of these materials can be more accurately predicted. Mechanical, physical, chemical and biological factors, as well as random and accidental actions (such as fire and earthquakes) are included. This book should be of interest to civil and structural engineers, consultants and contractors, as well as research scientists.
