This work aims to provide a foundation for evolutionary theory, to examine patterns of genetic variation within natural insect populations and to explore the underlying mechanisms that lead to the genetic divergence of co-existing organisms. In particular, the text investigates research on fine-scale genetic structure in natural insect populations. Part I presents case studies of adapative genetic structure in natural insect populations, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the experimental methods employed. Part II addresses the ecological mechanisms that produce adaptive genetic structure.
