A history of the war through the words of the commanders.
This is the first volume in the IN THEIR OWN WORDS SERIES, which captures American history through the words of those who lived it. This book follows the history of the Civil War through the recollections of the great commanders from each side: Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Farragut, as well as Longstreet, Beauregard, Johnston, Mosby, and others. It is more than a mere anthology, however: the first-person accounts aren't just hanging there, but are woven into a coherent history through my own connecting narrative. The book covers not only the great land battles, but also the naval war--from the duel between the first ironclads to the Battle of Mobile Bay ("Damn the torpedoes!") to the cruise of the C.S.S. Alabama. CIVIL WAR COMMANDERS also covers the guerrilla war, from Mosby's daring raids in Virginia to the bitter strife that ravaged Missouri (giving birth to the James/Younger Gang after the war). More than 40 contemporary maps fill out the book.
