Synopsis

This work is an anthology of 54 selections (primarily essays) arranged by the following rhetorical modes: narration and description; process analysis; comparison and contrast; division and classification; definition, cause and effect; and persuasion and argument. These rhetorical modes are presented not just as organizational forms but as ways of thinking and of discovering purpose. The concluding thematic unit illustrates all the modes and serves as a casebook for informal research papers. Each unit, otherwise consisting of essays, closes with a short story to provide a creative perspective on the mode under consideration. The selections provided aim to reflect a variety of disciplines in order to introduce students to the concerns they will encounter in the study outside of English. The "Persuasion and Argument" unit pairs essays that advance different views on the American Dream, animal rights, smoking, and welfare to allow students to develop critical thinking skills through the evaluation of opposing viewpoints on the same issue.
