"Understanding Abnormal Psychology" appeals to professors who teach an applied multicultural approach that is more rigorous and integrative (as compared to the "Essentials" version that addresses the need for a lower level, less expensive text). The strengths of this comprehensive text lie in its multicultural coverage, research and promotion of critical-thinking skills.

The multicultural perspective of this introduction to abnormal psychology is presented in a context that emphasizes the influence of society and culture on both the identification and the treatment of disorders. The authors encourage students to become active participants in the learning process by offering varying viewpoints and inviting critical thinking. This fourth edition expands the biochemical models of etiology and treatment, and DSM-IV has been incorporated throughout. Critical-thinking skills are emphasized more in the narrative, and a "thinking critically" box in each chapter provides background, questions to consider, and suggested activities in relation to an unresolved or controversial psychological issue. Ancillary package available upon adoption.
