Synopsis

This handbook covers all the native trees of the western side of the United States and Canada, plus those introduced and now commonly found in the region. The 400 species featured live in habitats ranging from mountains and deserts to grasslands. The most usual landscape trees are also included. The specially-painted colour plates show the important features of the trees and photographs show details of the bark. The range is wide geographically - from the Arctic treeline in Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico - and botanically, from pines, maples and giant sequoias to palm trees and yuccas. The trees' adaption to environment is also covered and their use by animals, birds and insects, as well as by humans, including the traditional uses of American Indians.
