Synopsis
Turning to a life in a cabin in suburbia after a separation from his wife, John Hanson Mitchell lived a life as if in a wilderness, without running water or electricity, with owls, foxes, and deer as his closest neighbors, and then with other local people who turned out to be as uncomfortable with the modern world as he was. Here is his story of his search for his place and his time. Thoreau was his companion in spirit.

About the Author
JOHN HANSON MITCHELL is the author of five books based on the single square mile known as Scratch Flat, as well as two travel books and the biography of the early African American photographer Robert A. Gilbert. A winner of the John Burroughs Award for his nature essays, he is also editor of Sanctuary magazine, published by the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
