Seller: Raven & Gryphon Fine Books, Hackett's Cove, NS, Canada
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Night Rounds; Patrick Modiano; translated from the French by Patricia Wolf; Alfred A. Knopf; New York, 1971; first American edition. Jean Patrick Modiano (French; born 30 July 1945), generally known as Patrick Modiano, is a French novelist and recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature. He previously won the 2012 Austrian State Prize for European Literature, the 2010 Prix mondial Cino Del Duca from the Institut de France for lifetime achievement, the 1978 Prix Goncourt for Rue des Boutiques Obscures , and the 1972 Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française for Les Boulevards de ceinture . His works have been translated into more than 30 languages and have been celebrated in and around France, but most of his novels had not been translated into English before he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Modiano has written about "the pull of the past, the threat of disappearance, the blurring of moral boundaries, the dark side of the soul . Called the "Marcel Proust of our time", he was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the Occupation". Peter Englund, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, noted that many people outside France would likely be unfamiliar with Modiano and his work. He is well-known in France, but not anywhere else. This book is his second of more than thirty works. This book is one of the rare English translations done soon after the time of the publication of the original French edition (1969) and it is a very scarce book, indeed. It is difficult to describe the condition of this book. It looks fine in a fine dust jacket. The problem is the dust jacket mylar wrap. It is elaborate with a paper backing, a brown border surrounding the dust jacket and a mylar covering of the dust jacket. The problem is the dust jacket is taped to the covers of the book! If the dust jacket was removed it would not look good. Leave the dust jacket covering in place and it is a beautiful copy of a very scarce book. Without the taping it is easily a book worth $500 to $1,000. Accordingly, this book is offered at a fraction of its value at $250. Buy the book and leave the dust jacket protective covering in place a job it has done very well over the years. Also, the first free endpaper has a red H in a circle, that I would think is a remainder mark. I personally, do not see remainder marks as a fault but rather as an indicator of the book's initial market acceptance. See the pictures. Seller Inventory # 1959e
