The developmental framework is based on universal developmental principles, which are effective regardless of the child's particular age or disability. By recognizing a child's developmental level of functioning, an adult can select strategies to effectively guide a child toward higher levels of relating, thinking and communicating. This book offers a refreshing alternative to rewards and consequences based teaching model to correct unwanted behavior. The developmental approach is optimistic, building on a child's strengths, with a clear path to long term success. The outcomes of this approach are that a child develops positive self esteem through a pattern of successful interactions, and becomes warmly engaged with genuine care and respect toward others.

About the Author
Dr. Diane Cullinane is a developmental pediatrician, board certified in pediatrics and neurodevelopmental disabilities. She is cofounder and executive director of Professional Child Development Associates, in Pasadena, California, a non-profit agency that provides a wide range of programs and services for children with autism and other developmental challenges, using the DIR approach. Dr. Cullinane is a strong advocate for developmental and relationship based interventions, and is a training leader in DIRFloortime(R).
