Synopsis
Atrial fibrillation affects about 5% of people over seventy. This text reviews clinical aspects of atrial fibrillation and presents information about the generation of the arrhythmia, its haemodynamic consequences and the control of the ventricular response by the autonomic nervous system. The implications of considering the atrioventricular node as a biological oscillator are discussed in depth, and a simple computer program of a model of the conducting system of the heart is given as an appendix.
