Despite a mysterious collapse in the ninth century and Spanish invasion in the 16th century, some five million people throughout Guatemala, Belize and south-eastern Mexico still speak Maya languages and preserve a Maya identity today. Ronald Wright set out to discover the roots of the Maya and the extent of their survival after centuries of invasion and a recent civil war. He found them fragmented but resilient, struggling to uphold their distinctive traditions - particularly their ancient knowldedge of time, enshrined in a highly sophisticated calendar whose cycles are still being kept after thousands of years. "Time Among the Maya" is the account of his journey - it is at once a travel memoir and the study of a civilization embracing history, politics, anthropology and literature.

Some age related tanning to top page edges. first two pages and last page. otherwise clean, clear text in tightly bound volume with minimal evidence of shelf wear or handling. This is a charming travelogue, particularly if you have experienced travel to some of the Maya Indian sites. Ronald Wright has given us an insight that could only be possible from someone who has spent considerable time and research into the politics and plight of the Maya people. There are some helpful maps for orientation. The writing is like a daily journal, which is charming in its observations and the attempts at a phonetic impression of the speech of the various populations that he encounters in his journey. There are references to some of the masterworks of more early explorers, such as John L. Stephens, with excellent drawings by Catherwood (Dover Publications), and the helpful translation of Popol Vuh by Dennis Tedlock. Ronald Wright gives us "food for thought" about the terrible things that have occurred in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico, as various political factions have battled for control.
