The first stage of restoration is cleaning. Firstly the article is cleaned of dust and dirt (with a brush, a scalpel, a cotton wool wad). Then spots are removed with white spirit and alcohol-water mixtures. General cleaning follows, various compounds being used depending on the degree of water resistance of the medium.
