A publicação que se segue, e que é o relato documentado dos acontecimentos políticos dos primeiros dias de outubro de 1910, acompanhada de referencia a factos anteriores, mas que com aquelles teem ín tima connexão, foi escripta logo a seguir a proclamação darepublica. Aguardei que a serenidade substituísse a agitação, não só pelo motivo de querer afastar-me de tudo o que pudesse passar por intervenção mi nha na Vida politica do paiz, mas ainda para que, sem paixão, pudesse ser apre ciada a minha legitima defeza. O tempo vae decorrendo, os motivos que me levam a dizer em publico da minha justiça não se desvaneceram. Tudo me determina a não esperar mais tempo. Não me arredo, levemente que seja, do meu proposito de me manter fóra das contendas que se ferem, e a prova está em que este livro se limita a factos acontecidos até 5 de outubro de 1910, sem um unico commentario ou re ferencia sequer as consequencias da queda do antigo regimen, por ser meu exclusivo intento accentuar a correcção com que procedeu o ultimo governo da Monarchia, o qual não provocou por acto seu o movi mento revolucionario nem teve responsa bilidade de qualquer especie na maneira infeliz por que as instituições monarchicas fôram defendidas.
