The design of this work is to assist the student of Ety mology in ascertaining the true derivation and composition of the words of the Latin language. That such an object is important will be readily admitted, and our only care need be to prove that our book is calculated to further this end.

Until recent times the most distinguished scholars would seem to have viewed Etymology as a kind of literary puzzle, wherein every one was to exercise his ingenuity and make the best guess he could. Mere resemblance was taken as 'a guide, without any consideration how such resemblance arose. Thus what is manifestly a termination was often taken for a root. A few examples of the ety mologies offered by the scholars of former ages will clearly prove this, and whilst amusing by their absurdity, furnish a strong argument in favour of a work constructed on such a principle as this now put forth.
