Die Anschauungen uber die Ursache der Krankheit blieben auch in den nächsten Jahrzehnten gleich verworren, obwohl Henle2 schon 1840 auf glänzende theoretische Erwägungen gestutzt, niederste pflanzliche Organis men als Erreger der ansteckenden Krankheiten wahrscheinlich gemacht hatte. Man hielt in Deutschland an der biliösen Dyskrasielehre noch zu einer Zeit fest, als Wernher3 in England und Velpeau und Trousseau4 in Frankreich mehr oder weniger bestimmt die Contagiosität-des Roth laufs lehrten und die regelmässige Abhängigkeit von äusseren Ver letzungen betonten. Mit der ihm eigenen feurigen Beredsamkeit trat der franzosische Kliniker für den Satz ein, „dass man fast bei jedem Erysipel eine geringfügige Hautverletzung finden könne, von wo das sogenannte medicinische Erysipel ausgegangen sei, dass aber zur Entwicklung des Processes eine letzte Gelegenheitsursache gehöre, die also keine unter geordnete, sondern mit die Hauptrolle bei der Entstehung des Rothlaufs spiele.
