Some indication of the important role occupied by tuberculin in Canadian veterinary medicine may be gathered from the amount supplied veterinary inspectors employed by the Dominion Department of Agriculture for the diag nosis and control of bovine tuberculosis throughout Canada, and which, accord ing to the figures of the Chief Pathologist, as given in the 1933 Report of the Veterinary Director General, amounted to test doses for the year end ing March 31, 1933. This extensive and almost ubiquitous use of tuberculin in Canada makes it imperative that a standard product of adequate potency be in the hands of veterinarians who employ it in order to obtain uniformly the best results.

Until recent years the method generally employed for determining potency of tuberculin for use in veterinary medicine on the North American Continent was by the lethal close method, which discounting modifications as practised in different laboratories is essentially the German official test, known generally as the Frankfurt or lethal dose method and is based on the fact that tuberculous guinea pigs will succumb to the inoculation of potent tuberculin.

At best, the determination of potency by this method is crude, for in the final analysis potency can only be indicated by the loose nomenclature, superpotent, potent, subpotent or worthless, in comparison with another tuberculin which had given satisfactory-results, instead of by more definite and accurate terms of potency units per cc.
