Excerpt from Introductory German Reader
It is the judgment of the best teachers that the early reading of a language furnishes the best means of master ing its grammar and idiom. In this book the effort has been made to supply such materials as beginners may re quire for this purpose, and at the same time to stimulate the interest in study. The Notes have been prepared with great care. It has been sought to give, abundantly, such help as might be needful and encouraging, but none that might serve as an apology for idleness. The relations of idiom, and, so far as possible, of form, between German and English as sister-languages, have been kept carefully in view.
