LI antichi cimiteri cristiani di Roma (che sogliono chia marsi col nome di catacombe) ebbero origine fino dai tempi apostolici per il naturale desiderio che aveano i seguaci del Vangelo di separare le loro tombe da quelle degli ido latri; e furono generalmente scavati sotterra, approfittando della natura del nostro suolo, per imitare i sepolcri della Pa lestina e quello stesso del Redentore. Essi vennero tutti fon dati al di fuori della cerchia delle mura, giacché la legge romana vietava di seppellire nell' interno dell' abitato; e si tro varono così in vicinanza delle tombe pagane, le quali fian cheggiavano, come è noto, tutte le vie suburbane. La loro esistenza fu protetta ordinariamente dalla legge romana che dichiarava luogo religioso ogni sepolcro chiunque ed a qual sivoglia religione appartenesse; e soltanto per eccezione essi furono talvolta confiscati, ma poi nuovamente restituiti Le catacombe furono cavate nel tufo granulare che ah bonda nel sottosuolo della campagna romana, e la loro esca vazione fu opera esclusiva degli antichi cristiani. Questi sot terranei presentano l'aspetto di una rete di Strade (ambulacri) nelle pareti delle quali si aprono file di sepolcri (loculi) o tombe arcuate con mensa (arcosolz). Di tratto in tratto si trovano poi delle piccole stanze (cubiculi) 0 stanze maggiori (cripte) e talvolta delle vere chiese sotterranee con decora zioni architettoniche cavate nel tufo. E questa escavazione si estende fra il primo ed il terzo miglio dalle mura di Roma.
