Excerpt from German Stories: Edited With Notes and Vocabulary
German stories owes its origin to a personal need, felt by the editor in his experience as a teacher, for a collection of short stories diverging somewhat from the traditional type. Previous texts in this field seem to have been arranged to meet the requirements of the preparatory school rather than those of the college. However well adapted the 2736113611 and similar tales may be, from the standpoint of content and diction, to serve as introductory texts to the German language and literature, it will be conceded that they possess little attraction for the average college student, whose greater interest lies in the world immediately around him. The stories in this collection are therefore, for the most part, realistic in tendency, and are concerned with the prob lems and vicissitudes of every-day life. As it was, of course, impossible within the limits of a hundred pages to select stories representative of the historical develop ment of the German 920mm, they were chosen with a view rather to variety of style and subject-matter than to time and author. A collection of this sort possesses one advantage which will justify its existence beside the longer novel as a school text. If one story proves un satisfactory it can be easily dropped and another sub stituted. This cannot be done, however, with the longcontinuous story of a hundred or more pages which must be dragged out to a bitter end, much to the regret of both instructor and class.
