Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book studies the role of rhythmic techniques in European poetry, examining how rhyme and accent have been used to create musical effects in verse across many centuries. The author argues that we can use the same techniques to appreciate poetry written today. The book traces the history of the development of rhyme in poetry back to its origins in ancient Greek and Latin verse, focusing particularly on both French and Italian poetry and includes practical examples throughout. She discusses the work of various important poets from these traditions and considers the role of these techniques in the development of the novel. She concludes by considering the importance of musicality in modern verse, and the impact of these historical techniques on contemporary poets.
