Excerpt from Geschichten Vom Rhein
These stories were written fourteen years ago, and have been used in manuscript form in many intermediate and advanced classes as a reader, and as material for conversa tion and composition. The pleasure they have afl'orded to both pupils and teacher is due principally to the fact that, although differing in subject and character, they form a complete unit; the stories beginning at the sources of the Rhine, and following continuously the course of the river to its mouths. Through them the author has had ample opportunity to acquaint his students with many geograph ical, historical, and literary facts, and to awaken in them an interest, and oftentimes a love, for German traditions and customs.
