Synopsis

Excerpt from A Dietary Study of a Case of Diabetes Mellitus

Rollo's advocacy, in 1797, of a meat diet in the treatment of diabetes, marks an epoch in its history. He was the first to give a detailed and intelligent account of the disease. Ih 1849, Claude Bernard demonstrated that, in animals, puncture of a point in the floor of the fourth ventricle near the tip of the calamus scriptorius and between the nucles of the vague and auditory nerves, causes a transitory glycosuria. In 1885, he discovered the glycogenic function of the liver.
