Aber so gerne wir uns die Worte des jungen Goethe zu eigen machen, so glauben wir nicht mehr mit ihm, daß die Gotik ein rein deutscher Stil ist. Wir wissen vielmehr, daß gerade die deutsche Kunst sich lange gegen die Einführung der gotischen Konstruktionen wehrte und anfangs nur ihre Zierformen als dekorative Bereicherung des romanischen Stils übernahm. Erst um die Mitte des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts, also drei Menschenalter nach dem Aufkommen der spitzbogigen, durch Strebe pfeiler gestützten Gewölbekonstrunktion, entstanden auf deutschem Boden gotische Kirchen. Man bildete'sich daher nicht an den klassisch strengen Formen der früheren Gotik, sondern an den Will kürlichkeiten des entfalteten Stils. Einige Bauten freilich, so vor allem die Fassaden des Straß burger Münsters und des Kölner Domes (taf. 42 - 44) zeigen die strenge Gliederung der französischen Kathedrale,deren Portaleinfassung über die ganze Wand ausgespannt ist. Aber die Eigenart der deutschen Gotik tritt besser an Por talen zu Tage, deren Grundform weniger durch Übertragung der klassischen Regel bedingt ist.
