Dans l etat où se trouve encore l'archéologie gnos tique, j'ai à peine besoin de motiver la publication de quelques pages ou du moins de quelques notes sur une excursion que je viens de faire en Italie à la recherche d'une classe de monuments naguère encore négligés aujourd'hui fo'rt appréciés parmi nous comme ailleurs. On trouvera tout simple, je pense, que je vienne signaler l'existence, le nombre et la nature des monuments gnostiques que j'ai eu la bonne fortune de rencontrer, ou la mauvaise de manquer. Appeler une exploration plus attentive à l'égard de ceux en plus grande quantité peut-être, que je n'ai pu voir et qui se dérobent encore aux investigations du voyageur dans des cabinets particuliers ou des boutiques de marchands, ce m'est une sorte de devoir.
