Aunque son varios los compendios de la historia nacional publicados hasta el dia, lo diminuto de los unos, lo inexacto de 'los otros, y lo voluminoso de los que hay mas recomendables son causa de que aquellos no surtan todo el efecto que se desea y de que estos últimos se vean solamente en manos de aquellas personas que por sus facultades pueden adquirirlos y que se ¡hallan bastante desocupadas para entregarse á su lectura. Estas consideraciones eseitaron en el editor del Compendio de la Historia universal, compuesto en frances por M. D'anquetil y traducido por el padre Don Francisco Vazquez, la idea de publicar separadamente en favor de los que no pueden hacerse con obra tan costosa la parte de historia de España que hubiese de_ servir en ella, purgándola primero de todos los errores en que suelen incurrir los estrangeros cuando escriben de nuestra nacion rectificando los hechos que en ella se encuentran desfigurados, y haciendo la honorí fica mencion que se merecen aquellos que serán per petuos monumentos de nuestra gloria.
