Excerpt from Data From Controlled Drilling Program in Kane County, Illinois
Hydrometer analyses were used to determine the amount of clay (particle diameter less than mm) in each cohesive split-spoon sample. Samples of approximately 55 grams were taken, and corrections for temperature and added deflocculants were made. The amount of material coarser than silt (diameter greater than mm) was determined by sieving, and the amount of silt was determined by subtracting from.the weight of the total sample the weight of the coarser material plus the weight of clay.
The rotary and split-spoon samples that were friable and noncohesive were sieved with Tyler screens. The dimensions of the sieves and the Wentworth and phi grain-size classifications related to this study are shown in table 1. The upper size limit of the sieved material was about 30 mm in diameter.

This book presents detailed data from eight controlled drilling sites in Kane County, Illinois, as part of a comprehensive geological exploration program for uncovering new groundwater sources in the Chicago region and other parts of northern Illinois. The study's geological interpretations facilitate better decision-making for land use, from construction to waste disposal, by providing detailed information on soil types, mineral resources, and groundwater potential. It also discusses the importance of geological studies in environmental problem-solving and land-use planning, making it an invaluable resource for geologists, environmental scientists, land use planners, and anyone interested in the geology of Illinois.
