For the information of Members of Congress, the libraries, and any others interested in the distribution of Government publications, this bulletin has been compiled, giving as briefly as possible an out line of the development of the existing depository systems, citations of all the important enactments affecting the present distribution, and complete lists of such depositories as are now receiving publica tions, these lists being arranged according to the several Congres sioual districts in the various States, and in a separate list those designated by special enactment under the heading By law.

The law as now in force provides for three classes of libraries in which are to be deposited certain Government publications for the use of the public.

These libraries are known in the Office of the Superintendent of Documents, where the distribution is made, by the following names.
