The object of this introduction will have been attained if it cause the reader of the fol lowing pages to bear constantly in mind that the terminology employed, although enabling him to follow, and to a large extent to predict, the sequence of phenomena, is hardly compatible with the most modern theory. The terminology employed is extremely useful and, after all, terms are only terms, and not facts.
