The South Platte River Drainage Basin extends from the Continental Divide in central Colorado, to near the town of North Platte in Nebraska and covers a total area of square miles in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. Approximately two-thirds of the area is within the high plains and the remainder is composed of foothills, mountains and intermountain valleys. The elevation ranges from about in the Rocky Mountains to about feet at the lower end of the basin in Nebraska.
