When a body ﬂoats on a ﬂuid, it displaces as much of that ﬂuid as is equal in size and form to the portion of the body which is immersed, and the bulk of ﬂuid thus displaced is known to be equivalent in weight to the weight of the whole body; the measure therefore in solidity, of the portion of the body that is immersed, will give the magnitude of the ﬂuid displaced, and the weight of this bulk of ﬂuid will give the weight of the ﬂoating body.
