A few errors kindly pointed out by Reviewers, or by Teachers who have used the book, have been corrected in this Edition, which otherwise remains the same.

During the two years that have elapsed since its first publication, several Schools in this country have been equipped with Physical Laboratories, and it is coming to be generally recognised that the training thus provided affords the best foundation for a scientific education.

There seems, however, to be some danger that the desire of Teachers to secure more exact experimental results may lead them at much too early a stage in the instruction to adopt indirect methods, or to discuss details in a way that obscures the main issue, or even to introduce into the course experiments of which the theory is quite beyond the pupil's grasp, simply because the manipulation happens to be easy and the subject important.
