Berne is the originator of transactional analysis, which he made famous with his landmark publication "Games People Play." In this work Berne lays the groundwork for a rational method for understanding and analyzing human behavior. "Transactional analysis" (TA), is a theory in psychology that examines the interactions, or 'transactions', between a person and other people. The underlying precept is that humans are social creatures and that a person is a multi-faceted being that changes when in contact with another person in their world. Berne developed the concept and paradigm of TA in the late 1950s and it has gone on to have continuing influence in popular psychology.

A clear detailed account of the theory and practice of Transactional Analysis and of its relationship to psychoanalysis which he likens to that of an apple to its core. --New Society
Lays down the principles of transactional analysis in practical schematic terms which often makes them sound improbably, almost quaint in their simplicity… Its simplicity is one of its most attractive features. --New Psychiatry
It yields many refreshing new insights into motivation and behaviour, character and social integration, thus being useful in any psychotherapeutic approach. --New Psychiatry
