Lester del Rey (June 2, 1915-May 10, 1993) was a science fiction author and editor. He was born Leonard Knapp in Saratoga Minnesota, and began writing science fiction during the thirties, mostly for Astounding Science Fiction under John W. Campbell. He wrote numerous stories and novels as Lester del Rey and as Eric van Lhin, Kenneth Wright, and Philip St. John. During the fifties he served as editor for several magazines under a variety of pen names. He eventually became an editor for Ballantine Books and with his wife ran their science fiction division del Rey Books. He won a number of awards for his writing and editing including the 1990 Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for lifetime achievements.
