Synopsis
Essef - An enduring classic, this book offers a dramatic and prophetic look at the potential consequences of the escalating destruction of Earth. In this nightmare society, air pollution is so bad that gas masks are commonplace. Infant mortality is up, and everyone seems to suffer from some form of ailment. The water is polluted, and only the poor drink from the tap. The government is ineffectual, and corporate interests scramble to make a profit from water purifiers, gas masks, and organic foods. Environmentalist Austin Train is on the run. The Trainites, environmental activists and sometime terrorists, want him to lead their movement. The government wants him in jail, or preferably, executed. The media wants a circus. Everyone has a plan for Train, but Train has a plan of his own.

About the Author
John Brunner (1934–1995) was born in Preston Crowmarsh, Great Britain. He is the author of over one hundred books, including the Hugo Award–winning Stand on Zanzibar, as well as The Jagged Orbit, The Sheep Look Up, The Shockwave Rider, A Maze of Stars, and The Compleat Traveller in Black. In addition to writing mystery, science fiction, and fantasy novels, he was a linguist and translator, and served as an officer in the Royal Air Force.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A first print of the Ballantine first softcover edition, November 1973. The cover is bright and clean with mild creasing across the front and back. There are no tears (see photo). There is slight creasing of the spine from normal use. The front shows a little smoothness and wear at the bottom. The cover design is by Mark Rubin and Irving Freeman of Plum Studio. The binding is tight and the pages are clean and show the original orange colored edges.
