Synopsis

Designed as a successor to the highly regarded Hutchinson's Practical Paediatric Problems
this will be an entirely new textbook for trainee paediatricians in preparation for the MRCPCH
examination and beyond. The content will be centred upon the RCPCH publication ' A Syllabus
and Training Record for General Professional Training in Paediatrics and Child Health' and reflects
the ‘Particular problems' that are identified under each section contained therein. An additional
section on tropical paediatric medicine ensures that the material will also be of relevance to
paediatricians in the developing world. The text will adopt a highly structured approach throughout.
Clinical chapters will open with a section of background information on the particular ‘problems'
being discussed, including anatomy, physiology and a description of the techniques involved in investigation where these will be critical to the diagnoses that follow. Core system problems will
then be presented in tabular form, with supporting text where appropriate. Selected short case studies highlighting some of the key issues will be used as an additional tool here. Each chapter will conclude
with an extended grey case and the reader will be expected to offer possible diagnoses, investigations
and treatment options with answers and explanations provided at the end of the book. With plentiful use of lists, tables and full colour illustration, this will be an invaluable text for trainees in paediatrics world-wide.

Review

The problem based approach of the book presents the reader with a slightly different perspective from that found in the traditional system based textbook. Junior doctors deal with and learn from dealing with children with problems - so this textbook with its alternative approach will be a useful additional source of advice and help to many starting off their careers in paediatrics. I would strongly recommend this text to postgraduate doctors coming to paediatrics (FY1 & 2) and to those starting in their training posts and studying for the MRCPCH.
