9780340731321: Official Health Statistics: An Unofficial Guide

Synopsis

Official health statistics is a unique guide which examines the different types of 'official' health statistics, discusses how these data are collected, then analyses how the data are used in interpreting statistical information. The text also comments on the strengths and weaknesses of the various data sets.

The book is organised into three sections: data sources about the measurement of ill health in the population; on social inequalities and the environment; official sources of information on the NHS and local authorities. In each section the main source publications and the statistics they contain are referenced.

Review

This is a marvellous book. Not only is it essential reading for anyone involved in health research, it will also be useful for anyone interested in all official statistics and their methods of collection and interpretation. Furthermore, it is a very interesting read. The presentation is good, giving the reader clear directions to related topics. I know I shall find it invaluable and I shall make it compulsory reading for my health studies students.
Paulene Hudson, Bath Spa University College

A highly readable and extremely valuable source of information on a topic that can appear an impenetrable maze for the non-specialist. This book is an essential addition to the bookshelves of anyone who uses (or teaches) health related statistics. It comes highly recommended.
