Henry James was one of the most influential novelists in the English language. This biography looks at James's personal relationships with the literary and artistic greats of the Victorian and early-modern world, from Browning, Tennyson, Turgenev, Flaubert and Burne-Jones to Sargent, Wilde, Shaw, Kipling, Stevenson, Wells and Conrad. His own correspondence, as well as family letters, both published and unpublished, are at the heart of this biography. Fred Kaplan's biography of Thomas Carlyle was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
