Synopsis

In this book we have attempted to write about and to illustrate every known species of owl The type of information available about owls varies widely. A few of the common species have been well studied but many others are still largely unknown. The explanation for this is quite simple: not only are most species nocturnal, but most also live in forests, particularly in tropical forests where observation is difficult. Each chapter has been written by a different author and inevitably there are differences of approach and style. Generally we have aimed at an ecological rather than a taxonomic account. We have illustrated as many owls as possible with colour photographs: many however, have rarely been photographed, and these have been specially painted by John Rignall. Though it has not been possible to reproduce these to scale, we have tried to give some sense oaf size differences.
