This book deals with a complex and controversial subject - multiple personality. It is based on an account from a survivor of abuse who talks about her own history of abuse in childhood and in adulthood, and describes her experience of having multiple selves, and the impact of this.
Six authors, who are therapists or counsellors respond to her story. One has multiple personalities herself. They each examine her story, exploring how they would understand her presentation and describing how they would work with her therapeutically. The authors' views reflect the controversy over multiple personality and their chapters represent a range of opinions evident in this field. This book considers an area of human experience that triggers strong feelings and often conflicting interpretations regarding causation and meaning. It does so within the context of the life story of a survivor of abuse and this both grounds the discussion and acts as a constant reminder that, whilst these debates inevitably draw upon theoretical and academic discourse, at the centre are the tragic life experiences of those who suffer abuse.
