A review of state involvement in the visual arts in Britain.
"The State and the Visual Arts" is a review of the development of state involvement in the visual arts in Britain between the mid eighteenth century and the 1970s. The book offers a critique of the 'quango' system, whereby state aid and authority is channelled through (or entrusted to) intermediary bodies. Dr Pearson analyses the debates surrounding arts patronage over the past two hundred years, showing how the same themes, patterns and dilemas are found in the 18th, 19th and mid and late 20th centuries. There is a repeated failiure of public policy.
