Synopsis
This book examines two closely connected questions. How is a belief in a universal gospel to be worked out from within a tribalism, a white Western bourgeois world version of Christianity, which almost, but not quite, suffocates it? Alternatively, how is the Transcendent to be located in the midst of the circumstances which make up the world in which we actually live? The contradiction which gives the title of the book is the contradiction between the behaviour of Christians and the performance of Christian institutions and the credibility of what Christianity claims to stand for.
