Synopsis
Still the world's largest state, Russia has been making a complex and uneven transition to a postcommunist system that has strong elements of authoritarianism as well as democracy. After an introduction that sets out the context of change, a series of chapters consider the main elements of the contemporary political system, the main areas of policy, and some of the most contentious issues in Russia under Putin. A conclusion places the Russian experience within the wider pattern of democratization.
