Synopsis
This is a practical introduction to the major categories and structures of English grammar. While insights are drawn from contemporary descriptive models, the familiar terminology of traditional grammar is retained wherever possible. Through sample analyses of a range of texts, both literary and non-literary, the authors demonstrate how a knowledge of grammar can provide a heightened understanding of how language works. Exercises and answers are supplied for each chapter and a glossary of key grammatical terms is provided.

PETER COLLINS is Associate Professor in Linguistics and Head of the Linguistics Department at the University of New South Wales in Australia. CARMELLA HOLLO is a part-time lecturer in Linguistics at the University of New South Wales.
