Von einer diplomatischen Laufbahn in unserem Sinne kann in der r�mischen Republik nicht gesprochen werden. Wie aber unsere Gesandten wesentlich ma� gebend sind fur das Ansehen des Reiches im Auslande, so bemuh_te sich Rom sorgf�ltig, solche M�nner als Senats boten'auszuw�hlen,' die als Vertreter r�mischer Macht deren Interesse wahrzunehmen besonders geeignet waren. Daher kommt es, da� wir eine Reih� der ber�hmtesten Pers�nlichkeiten der r�mischen Geschichte als Gesandte verwendet sehen, ja der Wert einer Gesandtschaft geht am besten daraus hervor, da� die Historiker sichbe' m�hten, Volkslieblingen, die an keiner diplomatischen Aktion teilgenommen hatten, solche anzudichten.
